The Four Hearts

Khateeb
Shahryar Abbasi
Place
833 Market St, 8th Floor

The scholars describe four states the spiritual heart can be in — pure, darkened, inverted, and the half-and-half heart most of us carry. This khutbah walks through all four, shows exactly how the ears, eyes and tongue stamp imprints onto the heart, and ends with the robber who kept a few doors open between himself and God.

Takeaways

  1. On the last day, the only thing weighed is the heart you bring.

Not wealth, not children, not anything you accumulated — only the one who comes to Allah with a sound heart, a qalb saleem.Q 26:88–89 That makes purification the central work of a human life, not a side project for the religious. And the whole thing is a battle running inside you every day: dark forces working to coat the heart and get you to slip, and forces of light working to pull you into purity.

  2. The scholars counted four hearts, and you will live in more than one of them.

These are states the spiritual heart passes through, not fixed types you are born into. The catch is time: the longer someone sits in one state, the more work it takes to get back out. It works like the physical heart — eat badly for years, let the arteries block, and eventually there is a heart attack. There are spiritual maladies and spiritual heart attacks too, and the person who has one has a long climb back. But as long as there is breath left, Allah leaves the door open. You slip, you get back up.

  3. The pure heart pulls angels around it the way the Ka'bah pulls tawaf.

In the first and ideal state, the upright heart, there is constant angelic presence circling it — the angels search for pure hearts and then draw more and more around them. That is what illumination actually is, because Allah describes the angels as beings of light. You have felt the effect of it if you have ever sat with a grandparent or an elder or a learned person who put their knowledge into practice: there is a sakinah around them, a tranquility you can't manufacture. Light reaches you through knowledge, through good deeds, through good places, and through good company.

  4. When the heart gets light, skipping a sunnah starts to feel enormous.

Every good deed presses a good imprint on the heart, and purity compounds. Past a certain point, sin becomes genuinely hard — the pull towards it drops, and what would have been nothing years ago now registers as serious. There are people who in twenty years have not prayed a single prayer outside congregation, because the Prophet prayed in congregation and the reward is twenty-five times the prayer prayed alone.Bukhari 647 That is the level of alignment they are chasing. The first step for the rest of us is more modest: remove the basic wrongs, start the basic good.

  5. The darkened heart is rust, and rust arrives one spot at a time.

Allah says the stain has covered their hearts from what they were earning.Q 83:14 The Prophet described it mechanically: every sin leaves a black spot, and if the person repents the heart is polished clean, but if he goes back it spreads until it covers the whole heart — and that is the rust the verse names.Tirmidhi 3334 Layer on layer, it gets hard to want anything good. The thought of praying comes and laziness swallows it. And the shayateen gravitate towards a heart like that and gather around it. When you feel spiritually flat, that is usually what has been happening quietly for weeks.

  6. The ears are the widest road into the heart, then the eyes, then the tongue.

Al-Ghazali treats this at length in Aja'ib al-Qalb, the Marvels of the Heart: anything with inappropriateness coded into it stamps that same imprint onto the heart. Listen to lyrics full of filth — which is most of what is playing — and you may hear only that it sounds good, but the meaning is doing work in a realm you don't have direct access to. The same mechanism runs in the other direction: there are non-Muslims who simply listened to the Qur'an without understanding a word of Arabic and were transformed by it. The eyes work the same way, through what is in the reels and the feed, and through looking down on someone arrogantly. The tongue leaves the heaviest marks of all — cursing, loose talk, and above all speaking badly about people, which includes what you type and text, not only what you say out loud.

  7. Think of it as a file every interaction writes to, and that you will keep reading from.

If you work with AI agents you know the memory file: every interaction gets appended, it compounds into a picture of who the operator is, and from then on it governs what the agent will and won't do. The spiritual heart works the same way — imprint, imprint, imprint — and garbage in means the person is coated with that, and it quietly shapes how they see the world. The proof is already in you. Hear a song from fifteen years ago in a hotel lobby and every lyric comes back, though you never set out to memorise it and haven't heard it since. You never chose to store that. It was imprinted, and it informs who you are. Which is why the question worth asking is what inputs you are allowing in.

  8. The third heart is the inverted one, and it belongs to the hypocrite.

The munafiq says one thing and does another, so the imprint being laid down is contradiction itself, and the heart ends up flipped upside down. Allah places the hypocrites in the lowest depths of the Fire.Q 4:145 It is graded worse than the openly darkened heart, because at least that person is bad on the outside and bad on the inside — consistent. This one is posturing. And the posture is pointless: Allah already knows exactly who we are, so there is no one left to fool except other human beings.

  9. Most of humanity holds the fourth heart — half good, half bad, in daily combat.

Not purely good, not purely ruined, just a battle. Some good, some bad; slip up, get back up; make a mistake, ask forgiveness. The scholars say this is where the vast majority of people live, and the goal is not a leap to the top but graduating from one level of goodness to the next. More good brings more light, and more light makes more good possible. The equation is simple; it is only hard to act on if you don't know what is at stake. Reflect, as Allah says, and this realm starts to open up.Q 6:50

  10. Acting on an impulse feeds it; refusing it once starts to starve it.

Every time you act on an impulse you lay an imprint in the direction of that trait, and it gets stronger. Control it and it gets weaker — a little, just a little, then more the next time. Keep that up for roughly the thirty to forty days a habit takes and the trait is under your control, and you can move to the next one. There are maybe fifteen or twenty of these diseases in total, which makes the whole list genuinely finishable in a lifetime. So the one thing to take away is this: don't live a reactive life, where you simply respond to whatever lands in front of you and make impulsive decisions that leave marks. Have a framework.

  11. Keep a few doors open between you and Allah, whatever else you are doing.

Centuries ago a man led a gang of highway robbers. One of his victims asked to speak to the leader and was told he was praying — and not even an obligatory prayer, a voluntary one; later that he was fasting outside Ramadan. Asked how that made any sense, the man said he had made a pact with himself to keep a few doors open between him and God, so that if he ever wanted to turn back he would have a channel left. Weeks later he was standing above a town and heard the ayah: has the time not come for hearts to be softened by the remembrance of Allah?Q 57:16 He broke down, went back to every caravan he had robbed and returned what he could, repented, and became one of the great scholars of this religion. We shouldn't rob people. But keep a door open, because all of us are slipping somewhere, and the moment of awakening needs somewhere to land.

  • The only thing that will matter on yawm al-qiyamah is the one who approaches Him with a sound heart.
  • This is the beauty of our religion: we always have chances. You slip, you get back up.
  • Talking bad about people will completely destroy your .md file.
  • If we act on it, it just gets stronger. If we control it, it gets weaker. A little bit, just a little bit.
  • There's only like fifteen, twenty of these. It's doable to move past all the bad ones and to add all the good ones.
  • I always kept those doors open because I always had the intention. I just needed something to awaken me.

Say, [O Muḥammad], "I do not tell you that I have the depositories [containing the provision] of Allāh or that I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me." Say, "Is the blind equivalent to the seeing? Then will you not give thought?"

  5. Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3334

Verily, when the slave (of Allah) commits a sin, a black spot appears on his heart. When he refrains from it, seeks forgiveness and repents, his heart is polished clean. But if he returns, it increases until it covers his entire heart. And that is the 'Ran' which Allah mentioned: "Nay, but on their hearts is the Ran which they used to earn."
