Where the Thought Becomes Yours

A thought is not held against you — only what you do with it. The four kinds of thoughts arriving in you can be told apart, and acting on the ones the angels bring compounds into light, while the rest can be left at the door.

Takeaways

  1. Every thought has a return address, and there are four of them.

The series has been about the war inside you, which Imam al-Ghazali describes as armies that grow stronger either through your good actions or through your bad ones. The thoughts that arrive come in four categories: the khatir shaytani from Shaytan, the khatir nafsani from the nafs, the khatir malaki from an angel, and the khatir rabbani directly from Allah. Allah created death and life to test which of us is best in deed,Q 67:2 and that test is run in an inner world most of us barely look at, especially anyone raised in a Western society focused on the material. The exercise this week is small: notice which of the four a thought came from.

  2. You are not accountable for the thought. You are accountable from the intention onward.

The Prophet was asked whether a person is answerable for the thoughts that cross his mind, and he said no: Allah has forgiven what whispers in the hearts of this ummah, unless it is acted on or spoken.Bukhari 2528 Accountability begins when the thought turns into an intention, the intention into irada, a will to act, and the will into an action. Just drink the drink. Just do not lower your gaze. Just look. It arrives as a thought and nothing more, and the person with strength says no and nothing is written against him, while the one without makes the intention in a split second, acts, and then says he should not have. Major wrongs are rarely one decision; they come out of a cloud of thoughts that was never resisted, until bad intentions are easy.

  3. Intentions are written down before you accomplish anything.

If someone intends a good deed and does not manage to do it, a full good deed is written for him, and if he does it, it is multiplied from ten to seven hundred times.Bukhari 6491 People will stand at the scales seeing mountains of deeds they do not remember doing, and will be told: you intended that, and it was written for you when you intended it. So make intentions deliberately in whatever field you work in, intend good for your family and the community through the work itself, and the writing continues while you work. A sincere intention also proves itself, because when the door opens the person walks through it. This Jumu'ah was an intention a few months ago, and then people mobilised, and now there are carpets, refreshments and a community in this room.

  4. The angel's suggestion is quiet, and it expires.

When the thought of a good deed comes, act on it immediately, because it is an angel suggesting it. It is never the loud thought: give that charity, pray now, make dhikr. Then the counter-thoughts arrive with all their reasons. I need that money for something else. I will be late. I would have to take my socks off and sort the whole thing out. I will do it later. The thought passes, the chance passes, and the inner balance tips the other way. It is the same as sitting down to read Surah al-Kahf on a Friday with Instagram one tap away, and the 20 minutes you had disappearing into a data centre.

  5. Without discipline, the desires do the driving.

Discipline is nothing more than the force for good inside being stronger than the force for bad. When it is there, "obviously I am not wasting this time" is an easy sentence; when it is not, the desires run the day and you follow. Allah asks: have you seen the one who takes his own desire as his god?Q 25:43 Even the word hawa is empty, holes in how it is written and hollow in how it sounds, and that emptiness is what people actually report once you get past the job title. Shaytan and the nafs move in to fill it with more desire and nothing of substance.

  6. People of substance guard their time, because they govern their nafs.

By time, mankind is in loss, except those who believe, do righteous deeds, and counsel one another to truth and to patience.Q 103:1–3 Everyone in that exception is a person of substance, and you will never meet a man or a woman of substance who is careless with their minutes. They are good with time because they are good with the nafs, which is the procrastinator and the distractor. Master the nafs and you master your time, and then you are in charge of your inner world instead of being led around by it.

  7. Good actions compound into light, and light makes guidance easier to see.

Angels are beings of light, so acting on what they suggest brings light into the inner world: light upon light, and Allah guides to His light whom He wills.Q 24:35 The Prophet's own du'a asked for light in the heart, the sight, the hearing, on the right and the left, above and below, in front and behind.Bukhari 6316 It compounds the way strength does: two years of training against two months, where the person may not look very different but can carry far more. What was hard a month ago becomes easy, and the people who seem effortlessly consistent are standing on that compounding. Master the basics first.

  8. Your environment decides how much of that light reaches you.

Angels look for the gatherings where Allah is remembered and encircle them with their wings,Bukhari 6408 and they are present in the masajid and in gatherings of beneficial knowledge. So make one intention a week, one prayer at the masjid, Isha or Fajr or whichever fits, and your access to that light goes up. The reverse is just as real. Gatherings with alcohol, loud music and immodesty draw the opposite company, and even without the veil being lifted you can walk in and feel that something is off. If work takes you there, do the business you came for and excuse yourself.

  9. The fourth thought is the one you cannot argue with.

The khatir rabbani comes with no intermediary, no angel and no nafs: a powerful urge you find very hard to resist, and for the most part an urge toward immense good. We pray for guidance and then look for signs everywhere modern life tells us to look, when the signs are straightforward and the real problem is perception. A cloudy windshield gives you blurs and oncoming lights; clean it and there is the stop sign, there is the car. Keep the heart clear and you are shown what to do in that very moment, and some people live so in tune with this that they are reading signs all day.

  10. You will lose days. The war is decided over years.

The goal is not winning every battle, because Shaytan and the nafs team up every single day. Losing today and saying I will get back up and go at it again tomorrow is how the turn eventually comes. There is a ditch on either side: after a slip, the despair he uses to pull you down further, and after a run of good deeds, the arrogance and self-righteousness that makes you look down on someone doing less, when a month ago you were where they are. Neither the deed nor the avoided sin is the goal; pleasing Allah is. Three steps for this week: increase your knowledge of the inner world, act on what you learn, and resist a few things you would normally give in to. That is enough for a gradual slope upward, and upward takes real push, like a climb or an early startup, until you reach escape velocity.

  • You are not accountable for the thought. You're accountable when it turns into an intention, and the intention into a will, and that leads to an action.
  • When the thought of doing a good deed comes to you, do it immediately. Because it's an angel that's suggesting it to you.
  • Hawa is a very empty word. There are holes in the way it's written and it's hollow when you say it, because desires are empty.
  • You will never meet a man or a woman of substance who is not mindful of every minute of their time. They're good at managing their time because they're good at managing their nafs.
  • The goal is not that you'll win every battle. Over the long term, somebody wins the war.
  • If your windshield is super cloudy, you're not going to see anything. The minute you clean it, you have clarity.

Allāh is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp; the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allāh guides to His light whom He wills. And Allāh presents examples for the people, and Allāh is Knowing of all things.
